California NEM 3.0 : Quick Intro
Five years after the last major revision, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is preparing to finalize the transition from what’s known as Net Energy Metering (NEM) 2.0 to a new scheme, Net Energy Metering 3.0, for all California solar PV customers by the end of 2021.
This new policy will undoubtedly have significant impacts for all solar PV customers of the three regulated utilities (PG&E, SCE, and SDG&E), from homes and businesses to schools and municipalities. NEM 3.0 will likely result in a significant reduction in the value of solar PV energy produced by these customers, and could upend the long term financial outlook of these systems.
